Lila Ferrante, grew up with everyone thinking she had the mind of a 5 year old. Her mother told everyone she was simple minded. Lila grew up as the baby of the family, her older brothers didn’t really spend time with her as she only played with the dolls her mother allowed her to play with. Lila and her mother would go away every summer where she would be tutored in languages, art, history, and she could just be herself on their summer get aways. Lila is deaf but not dumb in the slightest. Lila has been sheltered by everyone in the family and she is now 18 but still doesn’t have a clue about the outside world other than the little bit she been able to explore.
Tiernan Callaghan ‘Deathless’, is very dark and mysterious. He doesn’t allow anyone in. He has a twin sister Tierney who shares his dark past with him. His other family members don’t share the pain with what he and Tierney went through.
Tiernan has killed so many for his family and for the mob. He doesn’t know joy or happiness. When he finds Lila one night out in front of her house and she is sitting by the fountain he sees her beauty and peace within her. That’s the night her brother cut out his eye and he left it with her.
When the Ferrante family suggests making an alliance with Tiernan’s family he isn’t sure what to think. He knows the pain he had suffered at the hands of the sons. But taking on a simple minded wife - Lila he isn’t sure if he can do that. Once Tiernan and Lila are married he knows she isn’t simple minded. He can see her mind at work. He can see her drawings he can tell it was all an act. But why?
Will being around Lila open Tiernan’s heart? Or will he just have more questions for her family? Will Lila be able to trust Tiernan and share her secret?
