ARC book Review - Wicked Altar (The McCarthy Family Legacy #1) by Jane Henry

Book Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Book Trope: Arranged marriage. Enemies to lovers. Dark Irish Mafia Romance. Bully. Neurodivergent Hero/Heroine. Dual First Person POV

Cavin McCarthy always thought Erin was a stuck up snobby girl in school. She would always tattle to the teachers / principal who was the main ring leader getting him in trouble at school and at home. Cain just spent the past 6 months in jail / prison, and he knows he doesn't want to ever go back, he wants to get on the straight and narrow, but, isn't sure how. He needs to change his ways from 'fighting' to 'talking' and resolving things through talking instead of fighting. Now that they are both grown, Cavin is seeing her in a different light. He sees how special she is. Cavin knows she has 'ticks' and knows certains things set her into stress mode. Both Cavin and Erin are from Mafia families. Now both families need each other and have proposed Cavin and Erin get married so the families will join. Erin's family has the water rights for the wharfs and can move shipping items without much of a hassle. Cavin's family is more muscle and has more 'pull' with some of the other families that Erin's dad wants connections with.

Erin Kavanaugh is neurodivergent and has developed various mechanisms in order to help her, such as counting, and tapping her fingers in a pattern to calm her. During her childhood she suffered cruelty at the secondary school by most of the school children including Cavin, who was the leader of her cruelty. Erin's sister, Bridget is very sick with aplastic anemia - a rare condition where your body can’t make blood cells properly. The bleeding and bruising is actually getting worse and Erin knows she isn’t getting any better. The Dr's have given Bridget about 6 - 8 months left to live. Erin's family knows that the McCarthy family has ties to a Dr Rosenberg, who specializes in hematological conditions, what Bridget is suffering from.

Will Erin and Cavin be able to create a marriage and a life together based on truth and happiness? Will Erin be able to forgive Cavin for all the cruelty he pushed on her when they were younger? Will Cavin be able to forgive Erin for always 'tattling' on him and getting him in trouble?
