Arden Icaros is from the poorest of five noble bloodlines, she prefers life on the family farm with dirt under her nails over the fine dresses at court. While she and her family are summonded to visit the King and at a ceremony, everything seems to go sideways. Arden is blamed for something. And Bishop comes to her rescue and states he will protect her. When they leave the kingdom 3 assasins have made their way into the castle to kill Arden. She can't figure out why they want to harm her. Is it because of the marking on her chest? Is she the Harbinger that the stars have fortold about?
Bishop Marius has dedicated his life to his order. Empowered to execute first and question later, Bishop is ruthless, terrifying, and utterly loyal to the kingdom that wants Arden dead. His is protecting her in his kingdom/house. Bishop is keeping things from Arden. She finds a library is his house but the books are in the old language which she can't read. Bishop has been keeping something from the Order/the Kingdom, he has an 'army' they just happen to be children who have no where else to go. They are mostly orphans that live together, he gives them an education and also trains them to become knights when they are older. He is using his own family money while his own house is going into disrepair. The Order/Kingdom know he is keeping something from them, but, a training center for orphans probably isn't one they were thinking. Bishop wouldn’t just tell Arden the information she wanted. he told her she had to “earn” answers which of course frustrated Arden to pieces.
